Q4 2026 Foundations Focus
The Promiser and The Promise
Welcome to the fourth quarter of 2026! This quarter we anchor our hearts in Jeremiah 29:11 and the covenant name of God, Yahweh.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
Jeremiah 29:11
Jeremiah wrote these words to exiles in Babylon. God didn’t promise them a quick rescue, but He did promise a certain future.
יהוה
Yahweh
(yah-WEH) LORD
The One making that promise is Yahweh, the LORD, the faithful, covenant-keeping God whose name appears about 6,800 times in the Old Testament.
As we memorize this verse together, let it remind us that whatever season we’re in, our future rests with the God who keeps His word.

Faith to Warn and Work
The Life of Noah | Hebrews 11:7
Noah built a massive ark for a flood no one had ever seen, under a sky that gave no hint of rain. Every board he set was a warning to the world around him, and every day he kept working was trust in the God who had spoken.
This Sunday, Ed McMichael continues our Faith Beyond Sight series with the life of Noah: a man who took God at His word long before there was anything to see.
“By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.”
Hebrews 11:7
Read Genesis 6–9 before Sunday, and come ready to ask: where is God calling me to keep building, even when no one else sees the reason yet? See you there, friends.

Walking with God – The Faith of Enoch
Hebrews 11:5–6 | Taught by Jeff Pennington | September 27, 2026
Genesis 5 is sometimes called the "and he died" chapter. Generation after generation, every life ends with the same three words. Every life but one. Enoch "walked with God, and he was not, for God took him." No recorded miracles, no battles won. Just three hundred years of daily faithfulness that pleased God so much He brought Enoch home without passing through death. (As one of our friends kindly reminded Jeff in class, Elijah makes the list too!)
“By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
Hebrews 11:5–6
Jeff unpacked three essentials from Enoch's life:
1. Faith in God. Hebrews 11:6 is the heartbeat of our whole series: without faith it is impossible to please Him. Pleasing God means believing not just in a vague notion of God, but that He truly is, and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Enoch sought God with his whole heart, every day.
2. Walking with God. "Can two walk together unless they are agreed?" (Amos 3:3). Walking with God begins with reconciliation through Christ, not with religious performance. Jeff noted that many believers, asked why God should let them into heaven, still point to church attendance, tithing, and service. The right answer is grace alone. From there, we walk in truth, in love, in the light, in wisdom, and in the calling God has given each of us.
3. Being a witness for God. Enoch's life told a story of deep faith and steady obedience, year after year. Our witness centers on Christ, a living testimony of what He has done and what the Holy Spirit continues to do in us.
Class discussion brought the lesson home, with stories of a stranger praying boldly in the aisle of H-E-B and fond memories of Marge Caldwell, a woman many of us watched walk with God through both joy and suffering.

This Week's Walk
Make unhurried time for prayer and Scripture. Surrender whatever is holding back your obedience. Encourage a friend with fellowship or a word of testimony. Jesus gives us the perfect pattern (1 John 2:6), and the Holy Spirit gives us the power to follow.
Jeff's closing question is one to carry all week:
Will we be remembered as people who walked with God?
Jeff challenged us to walk with God. That same morning, Pastor Gregg showed us what it looks like to follow where He leads.

Trusting God: God's Clock and Cloud
Numbers 9:15–23 | Pastor Gregg Matte | September 27, 2026
We check our watches constantly, sometimes down to the second. But as Pastor Gregg pointed out, the compass was invented before the clock, and somewhere along the way we started caring more about getting there on time than knowing where we're going. In Numbers 9, Israel had no schedule at all, only a cloud by day and fire by night. When the cloud lifted, they moved. When it settled, they stayed, whether for two days or a year.
“Whether it was two days, or a month, or a longer time, that the cloud continued over the tabernacle, abiding there, the people of Israel remained in camp and did not set out, but when it lifted they set out.”
Numbers 9:22
Key Takeaways
Our clock keeps time. God's cloud gives direction. Israel was promised direction, not a timetable. They couldn't predict God's schedule, but they could depend on His presence. We often decide for ourselves how long is too long and how fast is too fast. God simply asks us to follow.
The cloud was lifted up, not taken away. With some two million people in camp, the cloud rose high so the very last person in the back could see it move. God isn't only for the front row. He leads every one of us, and as Isaiah 30:21 promises, we'll hear a word behind us saying, "This is the way, walk in it."
Are you a stayer or a mover? Natural stayers can mistake comfort for God's leading. Natural movers can mistake restlessness for it. The answer is to place our tendencies at Jesus' feet and learn both. As Pastor Gregg put it, stagnant water never accomplished anything, but still water did.
Don't trade moments for minutes. Scripture speaks of chronos (clock time) and kairos (God's appointed moments). Have we made an idol of efficiency, keeping a checklist instead of sharing moments with God and the people we love? Stillness isn't going backward. "Be still, and know that I am God" continues, "I will be exalted among the nations." Impact begins in stillness.
Following God's cloud brings God's provision. He provides daily, like manna, quail, and water from the rock, and He sustains continually: Israel's sandals didn't wear out in forty years. Pastor Gregg told of Kike and Lena, who lead our Spanish-language ministry and whose quintuplets went through 18,000 diapers in their first year, nearly all provided by God through others. Seventeen years later, their testimony is simple: we followed, and God provided.
Above all, the cloud led Israel to a promised land, but it points us to a promised Person. Jesus came at exactly the right time so that we could have a life-changing moment with Him.

Following the Cloud This Week
Be still. Pick a chair and a time. Put the phone and watch out of reach. The texts will still be there.
Read Scripture. Start in the Psalms or the New Testament and let God's Word set your direction.
Listen to the Spirit. "Let peace be your umpire." There's no peace in sin, but there is peace in being led by the Spirit.
Seek wise counsel. Facing a decision? Gather the facts and talk it through with a friend you trust.
A question to carry this week:
Am I being still enough to hear Him, and willing enough to move when He leads?
Big news for Foundations
A Brand-New Front Door for Foundations
Bible Study • Houston • Foundations
It’s live! The Biblical Foundations Life Bible Study Class has launched a brand-new website, with a fresh new look and a new address that’s easy to remember and easy to share.
Our previous class site served us well, and we’re grateful for it. This new one was rebuilt from the ground up with one goal in mind: when someone across Houston searches for a Bible study and a place to belong, they’ll find us, with the lights on and the door wide open.
Take a look around and you’ll find
what we’re studying right now, including our Faith Beyond Sight journey through Hebrews 11; when and where we gather each Sunday at Houston’s First Baptist Church; and a glimpse of the fellowship, service, and friendships that make this class feel like family.
Rooted in the Word. Growing together. And now, a whole new way to say “come join us.”
Tap the image or open the full site here.
Now we need your help. First, update your bookmarks to biblestudyhouston.com. Then, this week, text the link to one person who’s been looking for a church family, a Bible study, or just a place to belong. A website can open a door, but it takes a friend to walk someone through it. That makes every one of us part of the invitation.
