“Meaningless… Meaningless.”
A Jarring Beginning to a Lasting Journey
Teachers Sam and Noel Gray opened The Lasting Things study by leading us straight into the raw honesty of Ecclesiastes—without softening the impact. The book begins with a shocking declaration: “Meaningless. Meaningless. Everything is meaningless.” As Sam noted, “This is a frustrating lesson—you don’t really get the good news today.”
Ecclesiastes clears the table—our work, achievements, pleasures, and even legacy—and asks a piercing question: What do we actually gain from all our striving under the sun? To make the message unforgettable, cotton candy was passed out to everyone—sweet, airy, and gone in seconds. A vivid picture of life’s pursuits when God is left out.
Noel reminded the class that Ecclesiastes speaks from a pre-resurrection perspective. “Without the resurrection,” she explained, “life really does feel futile.” The Teacher isn’t denying God—he’s wrestling honestly with life before the fuller hope we now know in Christ.
Lesson 1 didn’t resolve the tension—it introduced it. And that’s exactly how a journey toward the lasting things must begin.
